The bonus for not dropping any items in a round are extremely high in this game. Try to move slowly when you can because of the sliding on ice aspect of the game. One tip I found while searching the net: If the dropping items are on opposite sides of the screen, run fast towards one side, and while you are halfway there, press and hold the opposite direction arrow. When you change direction, your character will slide towards the original direction and then change direction instantly once you catch that item. I get this to work about half the time. Jumping can be difficult since you can't move unless you are on the ground and it slows you down. If you are near a fast dropping item and a slow item is dropping farther away you could try to jump for the fast item. But, try not to jump when two items are near each other.
