Ah well, the good old days when you could look at the next image for the Mystery Pic before the competition started are gone. Neopets have now changed the file names to prevent this. When the competition starts, post on the message board to let everyone know and people can start searching for the answer. Good places to check besides the site in general are games, collectable cards, neogreetings, caption contest images, neopedia, screensavers etc. and page headers. Sometimes an image will remind you of a specific world, so looking there is also a good idea. Enlist other Guild members who are about and split the work lol! We all benefit, so we should all help. The image is usually enlarged, so if you have a paint package, reduce the image size until it is not blurred. To win, I've found you need to enter very quickly ~ within the first half an hour or so of the pic being released. (Now that you can't find the answer before the release of the competition there may be more time.) There are only 500 winners, and it doesn't take long for 500 entries to be made. If you are within the first 10 entrants, then you get a first place trophy, 5000nps and 2 items instead of one. I have found that if you enter very quickly, you sometimes don't win at all. I'm not quite sure why, but it seems that there is some sort of time delay.
